私は、とても苦労した覚えがありますし、
いまだに苦労してます。
なんと新しい研究によると とてもユニークな
方法で単語を学ぶというのですが・・・

Learning vocabulary
We could learn vocabulary while we are asleep.
This is great news for language learners and word lovers.
Researchers showed it is possible to learn new information while sleeping deeply,
and recall this information later.
The researchers did tests to see if a person can remember new words and
their
translations while they were asleep.
The researchers said our sleeping brain is much more aware than we thought.
A researcher said, language areas of the brain remember vocabulary during sleep.
During deep sleep, our brain is active.
This is when our brain could learn new vocabulary.
More research is needed to be sure how we can learn vocabulary while sleeping.
But it will be great if we can.

①読んで分からない単語を調べてください。
②キーワードは、while と during です。
両方とも似た意味ですがその使い方を

A group of 178 males called Tanaka Hirokazu met in Tokyo to break the Guinness
World Record for the largest gathering of people with the same name.
This group was started in 1994.
Tanaka Hirokazu saw his name a Japanese baseball team.
Ex-baseball player Tanaka Hirokazu was also part of this group.
The record holders age from 3 years old to 80.
Tanaka Hirokazu, 53, was very happy with the world record.
Anyone named Hirokazu Tanaka could join, regardless of the Chinese characters.
Mr.Tanaka told reporters: "I never expected we would achieve such
a ridiculous record."

カタカナ語が多いと思いませんか？
民放なら仕方ないかなと思いますが、
NHKで、ニュースを見てても、「国民のコンセンサス」
とか、聞いても、一体何のこと？ と思ってしまいます。
今回は、同じことを思っている方のお話です。
その内容を探ってみましょう。

Gairaigo
A Japanese man is angry with Japan's television company NHK.
He is tired of hearing so many English words on TV.
Mr Hoji Takahashi, 71, says he is stressed every time
because he hears an English loanword on NHK. He is taking NHK to court.
He wants the TV company to pay him 1.4 million yen ($14,300) for his "mental distress".
Mr Takahashi's lawyer told that Japanese TV is too "Americanised".
Takahashi doesn't understand why NHK uses words borrowed from English instead of Japanese words.
He said NHK should use Japanese and not loanwords for vocabulary such as "toraburu" (trouble),
"risuku" (risk) and "shisutemu" (system).
He wrote to NHK but got no reply. He said NHK does not care about his opinions.
He said that older Japanese people often have problems with the many loanwords on NHK.
"Young people can probably understand, but older people like myself…I don't know what it means."

①会話に使える赤字の表現を練習しましょう。
1) be angry with ～ ～について怒っている
怒る原因って色々あります。 騒音、渋滞など 文をつくってみましょう。
例） I am angry with noise.
２) be tired of ～ ～についてうんざりする
うんざりの原因って色々あります。 掃除、仕事など 文をつくってみましょう。
例） I am tired of cleaning my house.
３) not care about ～ ～について気に留めない
気に留めない物や事柄について考えてみましょう。 ニュース、予定など 文をつくってみましょう。
例） I don't care about the news.
②外来語を探してみましょう。
外来語の中でも、今回の教材とは違って、
例えば、 日頃使うホチキス、ボールペン、スマホ、それらは外来語ですが
そもそも英語そのものではなく、日本語化しています。 Japanese English ですね。
例）ホチキスを例にとって会話をつくってみました。
A: What is Hochikisu?
B: It is a stapler in English.
A: Oh, I see.
いかがでしょうか、ホチキスは、英語では ステイプラーというのですね。
簡単な会話で、外来語を確認してみましょう。
③以外な外来語をご紹介しましょう。
●カッパ 背広 ズボン 瓦 簿記 お転婆 画廊 ポン酢 イクラ 天ぷら かぼちゃ
などなど、こちらも、一件日本語のように思えますが、実は外来語だったということです。

They won the prize for making healthier sweet potatoes.
The sweet potatoes have extra amounts of Vitamin A.
This means they have more nutrition than any other vegitables.
One researcher said farmers didn't want to help at first.
The researcher said: "They told me it was a bad idea."
The farmers said their job was to grow more potatoes, kill pests and reduce
poverty.
They said it wasn't to increase nutrition.
The sweet potato could stop people dying from malnutrition - not having enough to eat.
A lack of Vitamin A is very harmful.
Scientists say malnutrition harms 140 million children in 118 countries.
It affects seven million pregnant women and is a big reason for children
becoming blind.
The International Potato Center said the prize-winning sweet potatoes
could help people get enough Vitamin A.

Engineers say paint will not make the rust go away.
They say all the paint needs to be removed first.
However, this would take too long.

Scientists have tried for decades to slow down the ageing process.
Now, scientists made a breakthrough.
They have found a method to "time jump" cells in our skin.
The scientists are from a research institute in the UK.
They say they can turn back the ageing clock in cells by 30 years.
This could make our skin look younger.
The scientists say their work is still at an early stage, but it could help people
look younger in the future.
Researcher Dr Diljeet Gill said: "We've only tested this technique
in skin cells.
We're excited to see if we can use it, it could be used to help other parts
of the body.

The company spoke to CNN. It said: "We're excited to introduce
guests across the world to Wonder of the Seas and its world-class
features." It said it wanted to "create something truly awe-inspiring".
It took three years to build the ship. It weighs 237,000 tons,
and is as long as the Empire State Building is high.
The ship has eight different "neighbourhoods" that will give guests
different experiences.
It also has 20 restaurants, four swimming pools, a water park,
a basketball court, an ice-skating rink, a surf simulator,
a 1400-seat theatre, and 13-metre rock-climbing walls.
