	ライン英会話レッスン　１２月教材 今年もいよいよ今月が最後となりました。 通常はクリスマスの話題をお届けするのですが 今回は、お手紙のお話です。 最近はスマホがあるせいか、お手紙を書くことも 無くなってきましたね。 今回は、104通もの手紙、しかも265年前のもの ほとんどがラブレターだそうです。　面白いです。
	Letters gathered dust For 265 years, 104 letters written to French sailors sat on a shelf in the U.K. They were opened for the first time. Their ship was taken by Britain in 1758. The sailors could not open them because they were taken to London. They gathered dust for two and a half centuries. Many of the letters were love letters. The writers were lovers, parents, sisters and wives. The letters showed how we live in things like pandemics and wars. The messages were like what we write today. 	Carrots or Grapes? Carrots are good for our eyes. A new study from the National University of Singapore says grapes are also good. 　It says eating a few grapes a day can help our eyes. A researcher said: "Eating grapes beneficially impacts eye health." She said this was good as more people are getting older. We can easily buy grapes. It is good news for people who don't like carrots. Thirty-four adults took part in the testing. Half of them ate grapes every day; the other half ate a placebo snack. This got good results. 　The people who ate the grapes had better muscle strength around the retina. The retina sends information about light to the brain. It protects the eyes from blue light which damages the eye. 	Forty Winks If you want to sleep while standing, the company in Japan has something for you　– the "Giraffenap" booth. Office workers can now catch forty winks without a bed. This booth lets people nap in a vertical position. The booth is about the size of a small public phone booth. The company says a 20-minute nap improves performance, memory, concentration and productivity by reducing fatigue. If people work non-stop without recovering from stress, they get sleepy during the day. A nap of 20 minutes is best, and you need not lie down for it with this booth. 	ライン英会話レッスン　９月教材 新しい言葉「リファッション」という言葉がありますがこれはサステイナブルな社会を目指す上で必要です。 捨てる社会から直して使う社会へと。 でも直すのは高いという概念がありますが フランスではどのように取り組んでいるのでしょう。 ファッションの国、フランスのお話です。
	Refashion We throw away millions of tons of clothes every year. A lot of these are nearly new. So, France has come up with an idea for people to wear their clothes longer. France will pay a "repair fee" for clothes and shoes to be repaired at workshops or cobblers. People will get up to $27 of the cost of repairs. The idea is run by the eco-organization Refashion. It hopes to help the environment. France throws away 700,000 tons of clothing every year. Furthermore, the world's fashion industry tries carbon emissions. The rise of fast fashion has worsened this. Poeple who love Fast fashion are buying cheap clothes to wear a few times. It uses a lot of synthetic materials which harm the environment. 	The hottest earth The UN has warned that extreme heat is "the new normal". There are more heatwaves and they are longer and hotter. In the past week, parts of the USA and China were over 50ºC. Japan has issued a heat alert. It asked people to stay in the shade and drink plenty of water. The UN warned that the heatwaves could continue for another month. The UN warned that we need to cut greenhouse gas emissions. It said that heatwaves are having, "a major impact on human health and water supplies." The heat that we are facing is making people change their travel plans. 	Smile Many Japanese people still wear masks. Some people who do not wear masks are having smiling lessons. They have "forgotten" how to smile because they wore a mask for three years. They want to learn how to smile again. A "smile coach" wants to help people to smile. She said smiling is good for our health. Smile coaches in Japan are busy. Around 28% of young workers in Japan still wear masks. Just over 67% said they sometimes use masks, and 5.5% never wear them. The smile coach taught 4,000 people how to smile. 	A new game "Wordle" The New York Times bought Wordle. The paper has many games. Wordle is a new game. 　It was uploaded in October. It is now a worldwide craze. 　 Social media is full of posts from people playing it and sharing their score. The price the New York Times paid was "in the low seven figures". The newspaper called it a "magical game". Wordle's maker made Wordle for his partner to play. He said: "The game has got bigger than I ever imagined." Ninety people played it on the day of its release. Millions now play it every day. Players have to guess a five-letter word. They get feedback if the letters they have used are correct or not. 	New Orchid Nature has many secrets. We uncovered one last week. A nature lover found a new species of orchid in Japan. Scientists announced it the new orchid. They said it grows all over Japan. 　It is pink and white. Its thin petals look like they are made from glass. A professor said we should look for more new species in common places. There are 28,000 orchid species. The new orchid belongs to a class found all over Japan. It is in a Japanese poem from the year 759. The professor was happy because the orchid was found in a park. Finding the orchid is good news. 　However, orchids are in danger. 	Vinyl records are back Vinyl records are coming back. People thought they would disappear after CDs came out. But now many young people are becoming interested in the Vinyl records. In 2022, record sales overtook CD sales for the first time since 1987. The year 2022 was the 16th year of sales growth in a row. A record association said: "Vinyl is cementing its role in modern music." "Music lovers can't get enough of the high-quality sound. Record labels have made beautifully crafted discs." The covid pandemic helped records to come back. Many people worked at home and bought record players. 	Drinking Water makes life longer Water is the source of all life. No plant, animal or human can live without it. Researchers say water is important for us to live longer. They say people who drink a lot of water every day are healthier. They live longer than people who do not drink a lot of water. People who drink a lot get fewer health problems and old-age illnesses. Adults who do not drink enough water are more likely to die younger, and to get old quicker. Researchers looked at data from 11,000 hospital patients over 30 years. The patients had visited a hospital at least five times – three times in their 50s, and twice aged between 70 and 90. A researcher said: "Proper water drinking may slow down ageing and prolong a disease-free life." People should drink more water, juice, and fruit and vegetables with water in them. Half of people worldwide do not drink enough.
